Alice Johnson x DARN

Inspired by the Tate + DARN collaboration, ceramic artist and designer Alice Johnson has created a very special 11-piece collection of ceramics for us.

Alice's signature style evokes a sense of joy, humour and nostalgia, so we know these designs will bring a smile to your face!

Alice Johnson x DARN: A collection of boat and fish ceramics inspired by Alfred Wallis and Tate St Ives

“Taking inspiration from Alfred Wallis paintings, to begin I first thought about shape and form and how these can be translated into a 3D object. From here a series of sketches were made of how I wanted the boats and fish to look and then I started experimenting with the clay. I found that rolling it into slaps and building them a bit like you would a gingerbread house (a very festive example which seems appropriate for this December launch date!).

The pieces within this collection have been the most challenging yet enjoyable pieces I have ever made, but ultimately I just wanted to have fun, which I hope comes across.”

As our second collaboration with London and Stroud based Alice, for this collection notes from the works of British fisherman and artist Alfred Wallis have been taken to create a selection of boat and fish candlestick holders that are full of unique character.

Designed and made in London, materials such as terracotta, porcelain slip and glaze, combined with a slap build technique, have been used to bring charming shapes and textures to life.
